Just like travel insurance is a consideration when planning a flight or cruise, insurance and benefits are on the minds of anyone considering a job as a travel medical professional.

Do travel companies offer benefits similar to a permanent position, such as medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, retirement plan, short/long-term disability, and/or family benefits?

• The answer is usually YES. Most if not all of these benefits can be part of a travel medical job contract.  Take the time to talk with your recruiter and travel company to see which benefits your company offers.

What happens to my benefits if I take time off between assignments?

• Your benefits will usually cease if you take time off between assignments, however, you should be offered COBRA benefits. I have found COBRA to be an inexpensive option and worth looking into.  Another option for health insurance may be looking into the Health Insurance Exchange Program.
